Recent Work: The Word Lights Up The World

An urgent commission came my way early this week. I had to create an inspirational decorative painting in a limited time. I had to work pretty fast. First challenge was generating a visual concept that aptly captures the client's expressed idea and more. My first concept featured a design of a column-like alter with scriptural inscriptions at the base.

However, as I placed the Bible on the alter, I realised it was too small and would be lost the large painting. An adjustment was needed and the base (with the inscribed texts) had to go. I felt this was okay. A painting is not a poster design. It will be more interesting if people looked at it with their own understanding and interpretation. The second take was acceptable to me.

I decided to work in vector. I changed the colour of the back elements- the map of the world and background. And started work on the painting.

The sculpted alter leads the eye to the piece de resistance in the painting, ie. The Bible. Hence, it had to grab the attention at first glance. An outline map of the world hovers behind the alter resting on the background, which serves as a frame for the central elements. I initially used textures on the background but felt the result was veering away from the mental picture I had of the final painting.

I am sure I could have made the textures work, but I decided to rely on pure vector graphics.

My inspiration for this painting is the scripture text in Matthew 24:14- And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations. After two days of planning and working odd hours, I finally achieved what I was looking for. Praise God!

Several scriptural inferences can be observed in my choice of colours. Gold (alter) symbolises the value of tested purity, red (Bible)- the redemptive blood of Jesus Christ, purple (bookmark)- His royalty. Also, columns are load-bearing pillars, hence the design of the alter dignifies, and draws attention to the gravity of, what is placed on it- the written Word. As an alter, only the holy or consecrated is placed on it, in this case, the holy word of God.

My prayer is that over and beyond the visual, God Almighty will bless this painting with the power of His Holy Spirit.

Past Work: Bible Knowledge Textbook Illustrations

I was commissioned to create illustrations for a Bible knowledge textbook in 2007/2008. I had a lot of images to knock out in limited time so I relied heavily on speed painting using Adobe Photoshop. Posted here are four of the illustrations.

Recent Work: Image For Christian Comics Design (2)

I needed to revisit my take on the Bible reading logo visual. The reader's face needed to project enjoyment rather than awe. I also took the opportunity to make the face more African. The vector image was created using CorelDRAW X4.

Past Work: Mended Marriage Illustration

After I got back to Lagos from Port Harcourt in 2002, I made some illustrations for the Life Press. These posted images are for an article about marriage featured in Life magazine. The three illustrations visually depict stages before, during and after a jarring marital problem. The featured scissors in the second illustration and the tape and blade in the third illustration illustrate the idea that a couple splits or sticks together only through conscious effort.

Recent Work: Wedding Gift

The following designs were made for my sister's wedding. One bequeaths a blessing and the other exhortation from the Holy Bible. Both designs were made in CorelDRAW X4, printed and framed.

Recent Work: Image For Christian Comics Design

The attached design is made for Comix35. The Image is vector generated in CorelDRAW. There is a lot of text, I was not sure which was clearer, a dark background or white one.

Recent Work: Church Poster and Banner Designs

I had a just a few hours to complete the following designs. The banner is for use at various church locations, hence I left the location space blank to be filled later. Featured in the banner design is Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church. I guess I enjoyed working on the church logo the most. Although designed as vector graphics, I tried to give the logo a 3D effect.
